Japan developed the world's smallest optical communication chip TWDM-PON optical chip

7/23/2019, the fifth generation of mobile communication technology (5G) can provide high data rate, low latency, large-scale device connection and other communication services, the spectrum used is millimeter wave. Compared with the spectrum used by 4G, the millimeter wave has the disadvantages of large signal loss and is easily blocked. To solve this problem, a small base station needs to be set up when constructing a 5G network, and the expected number will be 100 times that of the 4G network base station. In addition, the number of Small Cell base stations for passive optical networks (PONs) will be increased, as will the development of micro-radio transceivers.

Based on the above background, NEDO has collaborated with the Institute of Photonic Fusion and Basic Technology (PETRA) and OKI Industry Co., Ltd. (OKI) to develop a silicon photonics technology for micro-optical transceivers. Research. Now, NEDO, PETRA and OKI have developed optical communication chips for TWDM-PON, the world's smallest optical communication chip. It has been proved by experiments that the chip can receive 4 different wavelength optical signals and stably receive a total of 40 Gbps signals. In the future, NEDO, PETRA, and OKI will continue research on micro-optical transceivers.
